RRC RACE REPORT - SYCAA Road League

On a barmy night in deepest Barnsley our clubs latest outing took in the 3rd leg of the SYCAA road league at Worsbro’ Mill. No umbrellas needed tonight as the weather gods forgot their beef with us to allow just enough sunshine to feel hot, sweaty and happy rather than cold, wet and miserable.

RRC members were out in force with one of the strongest turnouts of the night as 17 of us gathered at the start line waiting for the gun on this 5 miler described as “rolling hills” ( heard lots of descriptions around the course but rolling wasn’t one of em !!)

The men’s race was won by Barnsley AC’s Kai Sunman in 26:33 and the first lady home was teammate Ruby Sykes in 29:32 but leading our club home was ‘flying feet’ Harry Macgregor who came 51st out of a field of 362 with a superb time of 32:15 quickly followed by Sarah Horner, 10th lady of the night, in 34:07.

RRC championship award winner Graham Dodd came 3rd in his age group in 34:37 with a great run before there was a flurry of aqua vests following him up the finishing straight. Paul Gent crossed in 36:20 chased down by John Fellows (36.24), Adelle Marsden (36:26), and Matt Hamer (36:38).

Laura Mann, hampered after a shoe lace malfunction less than a mile out eventually came home in 36:59 with Sandra Ford, enjoying not running waste deep in water this week, posting 41:42.

Gemma Johnson had a strong finish to cross in 43:02 with Louise Siddall , first outing back after her London Marathon heroics following in 43:18.

Richard Vaughan (44:09) looking strong at the end led the next flurry of aqua back with Jonny Fenton (44:56), Nadine Allott (45:17) and Andy Pidcock (45:20).

Recent Aqua league winner Fiona Earl posted 45:32 coming 7th in her age category with fellow league winner and recently crowned Trail Champion Stuart Frith coming home in 47:35.

Another great night for our fantastic club, superb atmosphere and camaraderie all round.

The next and last race in the series is at Ingbirchworth on 22nd May.

Coming up soon is the return of one of the best events of last year, the Rother Valley 5k relays. Previously we had 11 teams representing RRC, it is a great night, any ability welcome, please sign up and be part of the team.

Remember, a good laugh and a good run, the best 2 cures for anything.

See you next time.
